Data Centers Under Fire: Industry Faces Systemic Security Risks

The scale of the AI buildout underway in the U.S. is forcing a security reckoning the industry has yet to fully acknowledge. Data centers are becoming critical national infrastructure. These large, power-intensive systems underpin economic activity and government operations. However, they are still governed and protected like private assets.

This vulnerability was underscored earlier this month when facilities tied to AWS in the Middle East were targeted with drone strikes. As the expanding conflict involving Iran, Israel, and U.S. forces spread across regional infrastructure, data centers in the UAE were directly hit. A nearby strike in Bahrain damaged supporting infrastructure, disrupting power systems and degrading services across multiple availability zones.

The incident reveals a broader shift already underway. As a recent report from market intelligence firm DC Byte notes, “data centers are increasingly exposed to geopolitical risk,” and in conflict-affected regions, “physical and operational risks are no longer hypothetical.”
